Gas Leak Safety
Your safety is our priority. If something doesn’t seem right with your gas, use these four quick checks.
1Smell: Something Doesn’t Smell Right
A strong, unusual smell around your bottle, regulator or appliances is the most common sign of a leak.
What to do
- Move away from the area
- Keep everyone else back
- Don’t use flames, switches, or appliances
- If it feels safe, turn the bottle valve off
- If the smell continues → call a licensed gas fitter/plumber.
2 Sound:Hissing or Whistling
Gas escaping often makes a soft hissing sound near the cylinder, connection point, or pipework.
What to do
- Step back immediately
- Keep ignition sources far away
- If you can access it safely, turn off the valve
- If the sound doesn’t stop, or you don’t feel safe →
call a licensed gas fitter.
3 Valve: Something Off at the Connection
If you suspect the connection isn’t sealed properly, you can do a quick basic check:
Check
- Turn off the gas at the valve
- Brush a little soapy water around the connection
- Bubbles forming indicate a leak
What to do
If bubbles appear or the valve won’t shut off cleanly:
Leave it turned off
Keep the bottle outdoors and upright
Do not reconnect the bottle
- Contact a licensed gas fitter if the leak continues (or we can bring you in contact with someone at your expense)
3 Fire: Flames or Heat Near the Cylinder
Fire near a gas bottle is an emergency.
What to do
-
- Evacuate immediately
- Call 000 and say it involves LPG
- Only turn off the valve if you can safely reach it
- If gas is burning directly from a leak, do not extinguish the flame — stay back and let it burn
- Keep away from any cylinder exposed to heat
- Never reuse a bottle involved in a fire
When to Call Emergency Services Immediately
Call 000 immediately if there is fire or flames involved.
If there is no fire, but you suspect a gas leak:
Move away from the area
Turn off the cylinder valve only if safe to do so
Keep ignition sources well away
Contact your gas supplier or a licensed gas fitter for advice
If you ever feel unsafe, remove yourself from the area first. Safety comes first.
